Organic Brown Flax Seeds
General Description
Flaxseed is a small brown seed that measures about 5 mm.
Origin
Flax seed has been used for millennia by people who live in the Mediterranean-rim. They have used it for its fibre content to make garments, bags and canopies. Pliny the Elder mentioned 30 remedies related to flax seed. These are still part of the official Chinese pharmacopoeia like constipation, dry skin and Ayurveda (boiled flax and anthrax applied externally). There is also the conventional veterinary medicine made of flax to soothe inflamed mucous membrane irritation.
Nutritional Benefits
Flax seeds are rich in omega-3s, fibre and phytoestrogens (lignans). They are primarily recommended for cardiovascular protection but they are also good for countering the negative effects of menopause, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.
Uses
In order to absorp the nutritional benefits of flax seed, it must be ground before being consumed. Flax can be added to your muffins, smoothies, or to your morning cereal.
