General Description
Cranberries are a group of evergreen dwarf shrubs or trailing vines. The fruit is a berry that is larger than the leaves of the plant; it is initially white, but turns a deep red when fully ripe. It is edible, with an acidic taste that is overwhelmingly sweet.
Origin
Native to the acid bogs of eastern North America, the cranberry has been used historically by various Indian nations. The Indians were picking cranberries from August until late in the fall, sometimes through winter and early spring. Some of the fruits were eaten fresh but the remainder was set aside for the winter. They kept them in baskets made of birch bark or peat moss. They also had the practice of steaming the berries with grease.

The fruit of the cranberry shrub (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is recognized for its many therapeutic qualities, especially its antioxidant properties. It contains a particular element, proanthocyanidin A (CAP A), which helps to reduce the fixation of some coliform (Escherichia coli) bacteria on the walls of the urinary tract therefore, reducing the likelihood of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Its ability to prevent urinary tract infections has been proven by many clinical studies.
