The cultivation of the domesticated grape began 6,000 to 8,000 BC in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. Grapes are first spread to Africa along the Nile River near the Mediterranean, during Antiquity. It then spread to northern Europe, Switzerland and Germany. It was only 600 BC that Phocaeans, during Marseilles creation, brought vines to France.
